Over the past five days the 2nd Bangkok Used Car & Super Car Show 2010 has taken place at the Impact Arena which is sited on the edge of the city. With all the usual glitz, glamour and famous brand names this has however been a motor show with a difference as the booths were in the most part dedicated to used prestige cars as well as many "gray" private imports which were unashamedly on sale, sporting price tags and often "sold" stickers, as in effect the exhibition hall's vast floor space was turned into a gigantic car sales "lot" with row after row of gleaming secondhand cars, although in many cases it was hard to tell such was the high standard of presentation on show. The concept is the brainchild of Grand Prix International, organizers of the Bangkok Motor Show amongst other events, and this year saw the second edition taking place at the Impact Arena, located in Muang Thong Thani with the extravaganza taking over -- and filling out -- the Challenger 3 hall. Last year's inaugural edition of the Bangkok Used Car & Super Car Show 2010 was adjudged a big success and it saw 900 million baht in sales generated and for this year that figure is rock upwards and tip through the 2 billion baht barrier. Several car manufacturers, including BMW and its MINI brand, pitched up with spacious booths utilizing the expansive infrastructure it would normally bring to a full motor show (through its used car focused "BMW Premium Selection" and Mini Next" divisions) to showcase a wide range of immaculate used cars, while there was plenty of new metal on show through a string of Bangkok's leading private importers, including several examples of Porsche's brand-new second-generation Cayenne, here ahead of its official arrival, and Nissan's new family-sized 'crossover, the Juke, with its controversial but unmissable chunky lines, a similar story in terms of raw newness. Prices, for spotless and warranted cars kicked off at 200,000 baht and headed skywards towards 50 million baht price tags. Grand Prix International hope that the event will grow into a used car fair that will become a regular fixture on the city's calendar. High performance cars were in plentiful supply and these were led out by Niche Cars, the official Thai importer for four prestige brands: Lotus, Lamborghini, Hummer and Aston Martin. It showed off a gaggle of Elises and Exiges, including the limited-edition Scura in matt-black, as well as the new-ish V6-powered Evora, while the Raging Bull" brand was represented in the Niche Cars' booth by a brace of Gallardos, one yellow and one white, as well as the big V12-engined Murciélago, in "battleship gray". A couple of Hummers, one brooding in flat-black, dominated one end of its stand while also of note was a red 360 Modena Spider and an Aston Martin V8 Virage. lsewhere more Maranello sports cars were on show in the shape of a red 360 Challenge Stradale and an eye-catch canary-yellow California which gleamed in a trade supplier's booth. The Porsche brand was also much in evidence, and as well as the new Cayenne, there were plenty of examples from the 911-theme as well as a metallic gray Panamera, a luxury four-door car that has just passed the 25,000 unit production barrier. The new Audi R8 Spyder was another to make the long trip to Thailand in record time from Germany, and its big sister, the Q7, also dominated its allocated space with its sheer bulk, including one that has been kitted and tuned by German's aftermarket supplier, Abt. As the world-leader in volume prestige brands, Germany, was the numerical winner with dozens of glittering models from the Mercedes-Benz stable (convertibles seeming a hugely popular choice) as well as offerings from VW including its current-generation Beetle rag-top. To provide spice and diversity for the steady stream of visitors, each day for the five days duration of the show, two car clubs were chosen to join the line up of booths in the Challenger 3 hall with around two dozen examples of the genre they catered for being presented. Saturday, the day of my visit, this line-up comprised of two very well known Bangkok customizing clubs VIP Thailand and SiamSpeed. both offering rows of shining models modified to extreme lengths by owners. The former club - in the main - takes large luxury sedans and lowers them until the heavily spiced up bodywork rubs the ground before shodding these very distinctive reworked cars with bulging low-profile tyres that displayed defying angles of negative camber, all-in-all taking the concept of "squatting" well past the accepted limit. Coupled to this lavish exterior reworking are opulent interiors and features such as a "mini bar". Around the stands pretties introduced their company's product line-ups to the visitors with gusto and of particular note in the halls was the appearance of famous Thai actress and model Supaksorn Chaimongkol, nickname: Kratae, who attracted an appreciative audience whenever she appeared on stage.
