This clip documents the only successful challenge of a TV license renewal in American media history. The WLBT case was significant because it established an American citizen's right to speak at federal regulatory hearings, the right of standing. It's from a program called ON TELEVISION: PUBLIC TRUST OR PRIVATE PROPERTY (1988). Hosted by the legendary Edwin Newman and written and directed by Mary Megee, this clip was featured in a session at the 2008 National Conference for Media Reform in Minneapolis with George Stoney, Nicholas Johnson and Randall Pinkston. Right I remember reading about this. Every television station in America straightened up after this.

WLBT definitely cared about black viewers after this case. It was probably the only NBC affiliate to air "Showtime at the Apollo" BEFORE "Saturday Night Live". They finally changed the schedule when the station was sold a few years back.
