@mtailgator Exactly. So unless they ever actually experience the actual "bourgeoisie" lifestyle, they shouldn't act like they know so much about it. It's a very pompous attitude to have. And even though they keep saying it has "charm," I can almost guarantee they would never want to actually spend a day living it.

@chichirismuse actually I found it more of a twisted logic. It is quite likely this groups parents and most likely their grandparents were and/or are full-fledged members of the Upper Crust.

The elites of Europe did a good job of obliterating themselves in World Wars 1 and 2; or is leaching off hard labor and killing others only acceptable when it involes other Europeans?

Except for the fact that if they weren't leaching off the hard labor of others they would have had no time to develop anything at all. The term has a negative connotation as they are also responsible for nearly everything bad that has happened in the last four centuries as well. The elites of Europe were instrumental in harnessing their societies to obliterate the native cultures they found in the new world. If they had moderated wants themselves a reaction wouldn't have happened.

I see what you mean. Charlie is really insufferable throughout the film, but that's how you know there's a tiny shred of a possibility of truth to what he's saying.

He may not have a lot of charm, but, say, Whit Stillman does.

I'm not sure why, but when I listen to the conversation about the Bourgeoisie and all its charm, it still sounds very condescending to me. I think part of it is the way they seem to know so much about it when they have probably never lived as a member it their whole lives.
