The Musical History of Tim Sanford

Tim's first conscious encounter with music came about when he heard a vinyl record from his mum's collection titled Sting, composed by the famous pianist Scott Joplin (which is another way of saying it was ragtime). Tim was merely five years old at the time. Utterly fascinated by this music, he started taking private piano lessons. He studied for several years under the guidance of an elderly lady pianist, a true virtuoso, who trained him well, despite her apparent boredom with teaching which manifested itself during the lessons as she tended to nod off at times. She did have a good ear, though, and she could catch him veering off course in her steep and smack him on the palm with her ruler even in mid-nap.
Tim came away from the piano with a yearning to find an instrument more suitable for himself and at the age of thirteen, spurred on by the family and teachers, he joined the school band. He was allotted an alto saxophone, probably quite at random. He was generally told to play rather uninspired, dull themes, which struck a rebellious chord in him, so he would often play in his dad's shop, where he was free to improvise, which he liked quite a bit.
Tim was also under a great musical influence of his aunt, who kept giving him records and cassettes as gifts, ranging from U2 to Gunsn&Roses. Despite that, he had not caught the rock bug until he came to Europe -- before that he dealt mostly with acoustic instruments.
Neither can he ever deny the musical influence of his mum, who used to play the guitar and encouraged him to play it as well, or his sister, who was an accomplished musician (guitar and accordion).
Having moved to Poland, Tim carried on with his musical riot, getting into sound toys and electronic instruments. Searching for a place for himself, he formed the band Świrlandia [The Nutcaseland] or Swirlandia, which was a mixture of ethnic influences. They were offered a support gig before Kayah and Bregović in Warsaw, but the local musicians involved could not get their act together, and all there is to show for Świrlandia now is a demo and one musician with whom Tim played for several years in a band called One Million Bulgarians. In the so-called meantime Tim played with some bands from Rzeszów, rehearsing in a wooden cabin in Załęże, in various basements and garages, and playing more or less regular gigs and jam-sessions in the local bars.
The acme of his search for sounds and people came with the creation of the band BassAckwards. They played at various jazz festivals, with the guitarist Steven Cannon known for his participation in the group Hawkwind, with Michał Dudziński on the bass and with occasional appearances of his brother Sambor and Jacek Lang, the frontman of One Million Bulgarians.
Since 2005 Timothy has lived in Bydgoszcz and from time to time played with the band Tacuara Nod. A big breakthrough came when he bought a house near the city center, where his professionally-soundproofed mini-kingdom can be found in the basement. Now, regardless of the neighbors who can hear nothing anyway, the strangest noises can be overheard oozing from the basement at any time, day or night. Timothy is now contemplating putting out his own solo project. He is also open to cooperation with other musicians in the region, thus if anyone is interested, please email him at this address: tim9526@interia.pl
