Tai Shan, the giant panda born at the National Zoo in 2005, is scheduled to be transported to China at the beginning of 2010 per an agreement between the zoo and the Chinese government. The panda, whose name means "Peaceful Mountain," has captivated Americans and zoo visitors during the past four and a half years. Those who have nurtured him since birth say the day he leaves will be bittersweet.

  • Such a handsome boy!

  • One of the few animals that "looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but isn't really a duck".

They have the appearance, teeth and digestive system of a carnivore, but they don't and wouldn't eat meat if given the opportunity. They are more closely related to the racoon family, only they are strict vegetarians with a "strong" preferance for bamboo.

Like the cheetah, this animal walks on an evolutionary knife edge. It should've been gone, but somehow it's here.

  • he is so cute
