This is the pick up and deployment mechanism for our robot, details below.

This robot is required to navigate around the arena and pick up film 3 canisters (35mm). The canisters must be sorted by any means we choose and then placed in the corners corresponding with the sorting.

In our case we are placing IR transmitters in each of the canisters; the transmitters transmit an ID, and it is this ID we will be using for sorting.

Transmitters:
Consist of two 555 times in astable mode. Timer 1 produces an ID frequency; this is fed into the reset pin of timer 2. Timer 2 produces a 38kHz carrier frequency. In this configuration bursts of 38kHz will be made at the frequency of timer 1.

Robot:
The robot consists of an Atmega32, 3 ultrasonic sensors (SFR05), 2 IR Receiver modules, 2 DC motors, 2 Servos.

Pick up/Deployment:
In this video the pickup mechanism uses 3 towers of medium strength magnets.

In the final iteration of this mechanism:
3 Neodymium magnets on the arm + 1 magnet in each canister.
