Award-winning journalist Barbara Demick examines what life is like under the most repressive totalitarian regime today—North Korea. Her book Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea follows the lives of six North Koreans over fifteen years—through the death of Kim Il-sung, the unchallenged rise to power of his son Kim Jong-il, and a devastating famine that killed one-fifth of the population.

  • This reminds of the book 1984...

  • nk: people are rated based on their loyalty to the regime.

us: people are rated based on their loyalty to the dollar.

  • @sexlessparents you clearly have no grasp on korean politics, you do realise for decades North Korea had a stronger economy and a larger, better trained military than the south. Also, whether you like it or not, kim il sung and kim jong il were both popularly elected and the elections were tested without fraud. South korea had military dictatorships up into the 90s, and the military curfew was just lifted a few months ago that started in the 50s

  • @RedOctober1922

She spins things for neocon control

  • Half truths are lies, too. Almost every home has a radio (which can't be turned off BTW), so the 'no electricty' comment is BS. JohnfromPerth is also correct: foreign tourist are not allowed unescorted, individual walks at any time in the city, much less at night. If you lie about one thing, well... I find it interesting how her commenst are not simply observations, but the most obvious condesencion. Life in the DPRK is no picnic, but there is no need to lie unless you just need the ratings...

  • this lady is a fraud, ive been to north korea, people have electricity and EVERYONE has a TV and a radio, blackouts are occasional, but thats about it

  • @JohnfromPerth The diplomatics and the foreign people who works there can visit the city... Mostly.

  • @brainbasher hehe, indeed,

  • @gaikokujinNor In America rapists rape you, in NK you rape rapists!

  • @gaikokujinNor So true...
