One of the best essays about New York City that I've read is Joan Didion's 'Sentimental Journeys' which can be found in her collection of essays titled After Henry. The essay's ostensible focus is the Central Park jogger case of the early 90s, but, in the telling, it expands to include New York history and examinations of the function of race and class in the public discourse of the city. Fascinating and trenchant. I highly reccommend it.
