USS Enterprise (CVN 65) was commissioned on Nov. 25, 1961. Happy Anniversary to "Big E," the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

  • I served onboard Enterprise 93-97. V2 arresting gear alpo- came aboard for last 8 months of 3 1/2 yr/3.5 billion dollar overhaul refuel, shook her down, worked her up, then off to the med, the adriatic(bosnia), and finally on to the persian gulf where we steamed alongside carl vinson and kicked some towelhead ass. Big E was only ship built with 8 reactors(thats how we maintained 45 knots for 96 hrs and 4800 miles)making her the longest, tallest, fastest warship to ever sail the seas. ABE2BIGMAC

  • it's a shame they're planning to use her for a false flag attack

  • I would love to see the Big E in person

  • Thanks for sharing, I was on it in 1986 in the Persian Gulf in an A-7 squadron VA-94

  • My Dad served on the Big-E and was BTD, ETC in 63! Out of all us kids I am the only one who has never seen her in person. I hope to rectify that situation when she come home soon. I adore a ship I have never seen and yes am a Trek follower as well. Come on she is Amazing!

  • Back in 1969 when I was 9 years old one of my cousins husband was on board her when there was a huge fire on the flight deck. Twenty seven were killed and 314 were injured. He was one of the lucky ones. This fire was similar to a fire on the Forrestal in 1967 that killed 134 and injuried 161. Both fire were caused by a malfunctioning Zuni rocket.

  • I served aboard the Enterprise in the mid-60s. We were in the Gulf of Tonkin for the Vietnam war. Spent most of our liberty time at Sublic Bay and Olongapo in the Philippines. What great memories. One time when I was sick, doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. They sent me to Sublic Bay to go to the hospital there. I was shot off the Enterprise. Yes, I experienced taking off from the ship. That was rare for a regular sailor.
