The first train I filmed at Horseshoe Curve on August 4, 1994.

The early morning silence is shattered as a pair of SD40-2 helpers leads a C30-7A and an NS B32-8 westbound on general merchandise. Minutes after the head end was past I heard the sound of something coming downhill fast and wheeled around to catch the eastbound 'Broadway Limited'. The 'Broadway' was on borrowed time here; it had barely more than a year left before it was replaced in September 1995 by the 'Three Rivers'.

As the 'Broadway' disappeared around the curve to the east I noticed the westbound had slowed considerably; the helpers crawled under the signal bridge until coming to a stop near the edge of the park fence, thus setting the scene for part 2.

  • I really can't throw in on the who's better, PRR/NYC debate; cause sadly I was born to late to see either, though I was born in that crossroads of railroads town Buffalo,NY. But I do gotta say CSX nor NS will ever hold a spot in my heart like Conrail does, to this day, cause ain't no one doing it better around here than Conrail did.

  • @ljones121 Neither can I, really - I was born into the PC era and started watching trains in the very late PC/early CR era, along with a few glimpses of EL. Conrail (especially the Rainbow Era) holds a special place in my memory for how it can recall so much of my childhood.

  • Nice video

  • @FastFlyingVirginian This was likely the first day that the Broadway didn't have full dining service. The Lake Shore's Batavia wreck took one diner from the Broadway (and the Cardinal took the other two). The wreck in Batavia was August 3, 1994.

  • @FastFlyingVirginian, I probably like the Pennsy a smidge better too....really glad most of the Pennsy went to NS and not CSX as well. It's in much better hands :)

  • No prob man - I've got both Pennsy and NYC DVDs in my collection myself - but having been born and raised in Philly I do have a LITTLE bias towards the Pennsy. :)

  • @FastFlyingVirginian, oh OK, sorry. I like both the PRR and NYC so it's all good.

  • Hence the smiley at the end of the sentence - I was being facetious.
