Pierre Cochereau, the legendary titulaire of Notre Dame, whisks us lickety-split through one of Louis Vierne's Fantasy Pieces. Some questionable registration in the last couple of measures (at least from an audibility standpoint), but an altogether awe-inspiring display of virtuosity.

  • is he at gunpoint when performing this piece?....at this speed it sounds like his life depended on it. lol

  • I think we are all agreed that Cochereau played this piece -- as he did with many other pieces -- very quickly. Maybe he liked to show off his dexterity. Or maybe he just had a different sense of time from some of us. That's what makes horse racing so interesting ;-)

  • Amen to that! Definitely the greatest!

  • Cochereau's playing of this piece is by far the best I've heard! Then again, Cochereau is (to me) the greatest organist I've ever heard!!

yes, they added a Clarinet in the Swell (to play the Impromptu...), new chamades, a 2' Clarion in the Petite Pédale, and some other stops.

  • I attended a Cochereau recital once when he played this piece.........at this tempo. Incredible facility and ease, but rather too fast for the ear to follow.

  • great organist, great organ, great piece but slightly too fast for my liking!

  • I normally enjoy Cochereau's interpretations but for my taste he plays this Vierne Piece de Fantaisie too quickly. I have a BNL recording of the entire Vierne set played at Notre Dame by Olivier Latry, one of the current titulaires. I prefer his version, which is played at about 2/3 the tempo used by Cochereau.

  • I suppose this interpretation was very innovative and fresh in its time. I would never ever play that piece so fast. There is no time to enjoy the amazing subtleties of Viernes fantasy.

  • Did they add any stops after Cochereau's death? Or just the electricity? Anyhow, amazing video.
