Versatility is the name of the game for this producer/songwriter, and he's the ultimate beat chameleon, capable of changing his sound on demand to meet the needs of his diverse client list. "Too many times, producers can only do ONE thing...one sound. I'm out to change that. I'm bout to raise the bar for all these one trick producers out here. Armed with a studio full of equipment, and a lifetime full of music, J.Troup's well on is way to erasing the misconception of the hip-hop producer.
Coming up in the oldest housing project in the nation, life started out rough for J.Troup. "A lot of these dudes talk about being hood, but ain't nothing more hood than standing in line for food stamps, cheese and butter. That's the REAL hood!" Although the odds were stacked against him, his parents instilled in him unshakable faith, a rock solid work ethic, and a love and appreciation for all things, especially music.
One of J.Troup's earliest memories is Saturday mornings in the 2 bedroom apartment he shared with his parents, and his 2 siblings. "I can remember when Bambata's Planet Rock first came out. We were little, and Saturday mornings moms would throw that record on, turn up the stereo LOUD and we'd clean the house." It was then that his musical influences started taking shape. From childhood favorite LL Cool J (his name is James), Run DMC, Slick Rick, NWA, Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, Marvin Gaye, even Mozart and John Williams, J.Troup incorporates his vast array of musical influences into every track he does.
J.Troup attributes his career progression to a simple 4 step plan, which was ironically devised when he was just 14 years old. 1) Graduate high school. 2) Graduate college. 3) Secure good job to finance music dreams. 4) Pursue dream of becoming a music producer. "I've achieved steps 1-3. Step 4 is going better than I ever imagined!", J.Troup says, explaining why it's important for people to know his progression in the music game.
It is with this plan, that J.Troup boldly goes against the grain and proclaims, "I AM A ROLE MODEL!" He is one who takes seriously his duties to not only those who paved the way for him, but to those who are watching his every move intently, and often emulating what they see. "I want kids to know that you don't have to be a thug to make hot beats. You don't have to sell dope, you don't have to get shot or go to jail. You can believe in God, you can be smart, you can talk correctly, you can go to college, and STILL make bangin beats! In fact, you'll probably be better for it!"
So it is with this sense of responsibility, unwavering determination, unrivaled business sense? not to mention tracks that'll heat up woofers in Alaska that J.Troup has set out to turn not only hip hop, but the entire music industry upside down. With the beats and the intellect that he possesses, the old guard better be ON guard cuz a change is comin!
