if you play singleplayer you automatically get the bots, but if you're headstrong on playing by yourself with no bots (meaning no help getting up if you get taken down by a hunter, or held by a smoker) then you can open the console and type 'kick x' with x being the name of the AI Survivor you want gone

I managed to get here on Expert, then everyone died, and I had 10 feet to run to the saferoom. I get in, close the door, and as it's halfway shut, a Hunter hiding behind the door HITS me and I die.

I had a tank here, he killed everyone but me, I dodged his punch, took pills and ran away... He couldn't find me and died. :D
