AN: I saw the new harry potter film and OMG! It was amazing. So it wasn't exactly like the book but still the added Ron and Hermione bits were so AWWWW!! I loved it
Laurence sighed in frustration letting the smooth fabric of his stubborn tie dropped from between his fingertips. It swung lifelessly from around his neck as he took his form in from the full length mirror before him. If Laurence had been in two minds before he no longer was. He was too old for this he thought as he ran a hand through his thinning hair. He loved his job he truly did but his retirement was a long time coming. As much as he knew he would miss the job as a whole he was ready to pass on his role as chief to the next, younger man. In reality he knew his heart would always lie within his role as a sergeant. It had been the buzz of his youth but he was too old for the action now, he was getting on. He had the greying hair to prove it he smiled wistfully.
"As handsome as ever" a wise voice declared as Laurence's smile softened at the form of his wife stood within their bedroom doorway
"Just trying to stay in competition with your beauty" he announced earning a light chuckle from his wife
"You know you're going to have to go down there and face that lot eventually" she breathed softly. He nodded distantly as his hands griped the material of his tie once more
"Come here let me do it" His wife beckoned walking towards him taking his tie within her own aged hands.
"I'm getting old Ally" he breathed as she straightened out his tie. She stopped mid stroke and looked up at him fire beneath her eyes
"You're not old" she scolded
"It's my retirement love" Laurence smiled softly as she dropped the material of his perfectly shaped tie from her hands
"Still doesn't make you old Laurence not in the way you think as of old" she retaliated
"And how is my view of old different from yours" he sighed as he made his way towards their bed slouching down onto the cotton material. Gently Allison sat down beside him softly placing her hand upon his thigh.
"You see yourself as becoming useless..."
"I..."
"let me finish Laurence" she laughed "You think because you can no longer join in the action of your team, that your no longer as fast and strong as you once were that your useless. That's your version of old. My version of old Laurence is reaching the prime of your life" she finished turning to face her husband determinedly
"Prime of my life?" he asked a small smile on his lips
"Yep hear me out" she pressed holding up a hand
"Go ahead" he smirked taking her hand within his own
"Prime of your life in another way, a different way from strength and sped, as in your memories, wisdom and enjoyment. We've grown up from when we were young or even middle aged Laurence were more experienced now wiser and we have the memories to enjoy, proving it. We may not be able to do some of the things we could do before but we can do a lot more now than we ever could back then"
"Like?" he pressed
"Like watching our family grow, meeting our grandchildren. Watching the brilliance of the devotion you put into your job live on because of what you achieved. You helped and save many people Laurence. You gave them back their life's, their opportunities, because of you they get to live their life to the fullest because of what you did in your own. In growing old you helped others. Would you take it back?" she asked knowingly
"No but maybe more time" he admitted letting his wife's words slowly sink in.
Squeezing his knee comfortingly she kissed his cheek softly before standing up from their bed. Moving across the room she picked up an item from his desk before moving back towards him.
"There's always time love" she smiled softly "Their here you know, down stairs waiting for you, we all are" She noted encouragingly before dropping an envelope onto his lap.
"Were be waiting for you when you're ready" she smiled warmly one last time before exiting the room
Gently he lifted the sill of the envelope. His wife had handed out invitations for his retirement party months ago. Their acceptance had reached them two weeks after yet he had found himself looking at it every day since. He unfolded the photography as the sense of Déjà vu washed over him, just as it always did.
AN: I thought it would be fitting to end the story in the point of view of Laurence the police officer as it did indeed start with him in the very, very beginning.
