Skype's mobile app uses Verizon's 3G data network when used on an Android phone...right? Wrong. In this video, we conduct a series of tests and arrive at the conclusion that Skype Mobile on Verizon Android phones actually makes calls over Verizon's voice network.

  • @PravNJ Yeah, but if you turn it off and it works it clearly shows that is does not use the data network.

  • Or. To keep it simple you can just set up a VOIP account and pay about 1.9c per minute outgoing and free incoming.

  • Get yourself an account and number with sipgate, a callback application such as Gvoice call back, sipdroid and a google voice number and you will have free calls over wifi. Not as complicated as it sounds and it works. Supposed to work over 3G, but I haven't had much luck. Happy with wifi to save on my minutes.

  • I found voip available at vontrump.com really cheap.

  • The new Skype app works over wifi, without being connected to my provider's network. So the new Skype app really is Skype! :)

  • also. whay couldnt you just use a data on/off app to demonstrate this.. or at the very least, turn on dial up networking, which disables the data connection.. ??!

  • when it said web page not available, there was a data connection - it said 1x, I saw it, please explain.

  • @PravNJ No. I use skype on my Wifi/3G Tmobile Galaxy Tab and have NO issues, and impossible to get a bill as voice data is disabled on US Galaxy Tab's

  • so skype for android is just an app that "dials a number" and nothing more? its just an intermediate app that dials a number? hahaha FAIL. Too bad uninformed consumers would go ahead use the app and notice their voice usage go up! and end up paying more?

  • @CPGustafson turning cellular data off would have no effect on skype as it has been clearly demonstrated that skype uses the regular voice network as opposed to true VOIP (which transmits voice as data packets)

However if the skype app did utilize verizon's data network "turning cellular data off" would mean that skype would cease to function on verizon. The point is "skype for computers" uses data packets to transmit voice (VOIP) this should be the case on android which sadly is not :(
