Holtville California — Strong Man Steve Carrier will be bringing demonstration of strength and a word of encouragement to the Youth of Imperial Valley this week. He can lift hundreds of pounds, break baseball bats with his bare hands and tear a telephone book into shreds. However, Dallas strongman Steve Carrier said it doesn't take muscles to break bad habits such as drugs, violence and bowing to peer pressure. It simply takes faith in God and belief in oneself.
Carrier who was crippled as a child, had to wear braces on his legs to walk. Was inspired as a child by watching a strongman show and dreamed about becoming one. He talks about goals and dreams. He calls himself the original Forrest Gump, but he overcame his disabilities and went on to play college basketball and became a competitive power lifter.
He took second place on an ESPN strength competition championship and appeared on the television shows "Walker, Texas Ranger" and on "Ripley's Believe It Or Not."
His public school talks emphasize leadership and taking responsibility, he said.
"People respond to power," he said. "Young people especially are amazed, and when something interests them, they listen."
For 15 years, Carrier has used his 6-foot-4, 290-pound stature and rippling muscles as a tool for encouraging young people around the world.
Carrier will be performing these feats of strength in Holtville at Finley Elementary School Monday at 1pm and at Faith Assembly in Imperial at 6:30pm Monday thru Wednesday September 21-23 2009. There is no charge for the show that could influence a change in the direction of someones life.
