Vietnamese Mail Order Bride #1 (Taiwan)

According to Professor Chyong-fang Ko from the Taiwanese Central Research Institute, Vietnamese brides account for 35% of 338,000 foreign brides in Taiwan, or around 118,300 women, mainly from the south of Vietnam.

Women like Huynh Mai are the victims of a practice that is fast becoming more popular. According to the Korean Statistics Office, the total number of Vietnamese brides married to Korean men nearly doubled to 10,131 in 2006 from 5,822 in 2005. In an interview with The Yale Globalist, social worker Bui Van Anh from the province of Ben Tre said, "In some villages here, almost everyone has family members or knows someone who is married to foreign men."

Yeah, the typical profile of a Singaporean man who buys a Vietnamese is old, despotic, violent, divorced and is from the working class. It's sad that despite all these facts, his relative wealth is enough to buy him an unassuming bride whom he doesn't deserve.

@couchpotato25 but like, who "buys wives" this day and age? this isnt really poor governance. this industry is legal, because its almost like the "pen pal" kind of phenomena. there are other countries that are as poor, or even poorer than vietnam, but they dont result in this kind of thing.

yes, those singaporean men (or any guy) are losers that cant fine anyone, but why even agree to being sold to them? it's a mentality that's a problem.

tbh, these women are victims of poor governance (both in Singapore & Vietnam). Singapore likes to think it's civilized, but the level of racism/sexism/classism in this supposedly developed country is atrocious! the government condones this and it gets worse by the day. my heart goes out to these Vietnamese women.

@kinhnegrito it's not fair to label these women "cheap", every human has the basic instinct to improve their lives. if you live under a corrupt government, it's only natural to want to seek a better life elsewhere. cheap is what I would call prostitutes & homewreckers.

@megatroll of course they do. It's actually pretty shallow, you can basically go to Thailand and buy women off the streets. It's a scandalous business.
