Here's a clip I showed during one of my many Disney events interviewing Mary Costa. A pre-operatic Costa (best known as the voice of Princess Aurora in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty") sings a duet with actor Rory Calhoun on a November 11, 1956 episode of "Shower of Stars," hosted by Jack Benny. Costa, who regularly appeared in live commercials on the show, was encouraged by Benny to pursue a career in opera, and she did, with great success.

  • When Mary Costa says her and Rory worked together before it reminds me of the part in Sleeping Beauty when she says " but we've met before" during once upon a dream :)

  • It's always interesting to see young stars who later go on to even bigger things. Mary Costa found greater fame as the voice of Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" and then as a major opera singer in the 1960s-1980s before her retirement. And best of all, look up some of her photos today - she still looks great in her 70s!

  • I just saw them in "The Big Caper" yesterday. It's a dandy film-noir and they were quite good.

  • This is great! Thanks so much for sharing. I've only ever heard Mary Costa singing opera arias --- and Disney's "Sleeping Beauty", of course! This is a great number.

  • @IJDS99 cause it's not opera singing. this singing technique is different. and she doesn't sing high notes here like she did in "Sleeping Beauty"

  • She was so worthy of playing Sleeping Beauty

  • i love mary costa ya noe i like how fast they walk up nowadays ppl take 4ever

  • this is great love rory calhoun thank u

  • Look! Talented singers who can sing live! =D

  • @IJDS99 also, she has a southern accent and in the movie, she had to make a more european, medieval voice to match sleeping beauty's time, you know? :)

  • love it!
