They should just name this song "Aw Shit". That's my immediate reaction whenever I hear it.

Here....is where you KNOW when shit is going down when you here the chimes, and the theme.

@bigsky1970 He said three. Get rid of your cookie-cutter hearing aid.

@videoman5100 so true, so true

What I heard from a firend who is a director at a local NBC affiliate is that unannounced cut-ins are VERY rare, that only when stuff is really bad, usually they will say that at such-and-such a time we will want you to take "Net".

Tree Star General... Ugh, Brian Williams is a cookie-cutter news anchor.

@TarrVlogs Yeah. It was the same story too. :)

I see where folks like @altfactor are getting at. But, do we really need the (yes fancy) CGI for the countdown???
In our present day, we already have lovely graphics and music for the Special Report theme itself before we get to hear about and see looping footage of a plane crash or escalating rioting in Anytown, Worldwide.

The ultimate in "Shit is going down". Nothing, NOTHING, compares to the feeling you get when you're in your underwear relaxing in a recliner watching Jeopardy when all of sudden: *ding-diiiing-ding - - - DADADADADADAWAHWAHWAH!, 'This is an NBC Special Report!"*.

For some reason I think my local NBC affiliate gets the special report cut ins late. They never air the countdown and sometimes the beginning of the open gets cut off too.
The countdown you see isn't because the network was trying to be fancy.
It's there so master-control personnel at affiliates not carrying the network feed can switch to the network and not miss any of the special report.
That's the same reason why "in the old days", you'd see a "Special Report" slide for several seconds before you hear the words "We Interrupt This Program...". Again, so those stations not carrying the network can come on board.

nice countdown, my local station picked it up at "here is Brian Williams" and in SD. The other local in Boston did their own coverage.
