Newman was - by his own admission, I think - heavily inspired by Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.

No question about it. But then, the films of today don't exactly inspire any composer to come up with anything save noise.

There are many great things about this underrated classic. Number one I think is the soundtrack.

This music is not from Jesus of Nazareth. It is from The Greatest Story Ever Told, from the book of the same name by Fulton Oursler.

It does not make any difference to me, but was Alfred Newman Jewish? So many of the grand Hollywood compsers were and I was just wondering..

Yes. Unlike the other greats, he was born in the USA. Ironically, 'American sounding' film music was largely written by composers born abroad.
