From 1968 - made it to number 52 on the Billboard chart in the U.S. and received some airplay in Canada and here in Oz - not as big as it should have been - one of his 'serious' songs..

  • As much I like his funny side, I actually love Ray Stevens for his serious side more than anything. He is quite a talent.

  • @4string59

    I totally agree!!!!

I personally adore his awesome, non-comedic songs like this gem and "Mr. Businessman"!!!

I wish he had CONTINUED to write classic songs in this style and put his comedy stuff on the backburner.

  • @John1948NineE John, that link didn't work for me, even when I substituted the dot. Maybe it's a song that gotten taken down. To celebrate Ray's birthday yesterday (same day as Neil Diamond's), I wanted to play his 1968 anti-rat race trilogy of this song, "Mr. Businessman", and "The Great Escape", but I couldn't find "The Great Escape" on YouTube, and the only versions of "Mr. Businessman" are either live or re-recording/alternate versions. I only got successful with "Unwind".

  • @rslitman This one - youtube[DOT]com/watch?v=KH2E8ls21Sg - is my favorite Ray Stevens song.

  • This is the first song I ever heard by Ray Stevens. The second was "Mr. Business". I didn't discover his comedy side until later.

  • Great lyrics, keyboards, orchestrations and of course that distinctive voice!

    Thanks for posting.

  • Love this song...what a talented man... also love to hear him sing MISTY

  • @nickandmikec

    Me too!!

  • I was 9 1/2 when this song came out, and I've been Ray Stevens fan ever since!

  • Yea, the album, "Even Stevens," with this song and all of his best serious orginal songs is the best! Gosh I wish he would have continued to write serious songs.
