Suzhou (苏州) is a city on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and on the shores of Lake Taihu in the province of Jiangsu, China. The city is renowned for its beautiful stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed gardens which have contributed to its status as a great tourist attraction. Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Suzhou has also been an important centre for China's silk industry and continues to hold that prominent position today. The city is part of the Yangtze River Delta region. The GDP per capita was ¥106,412 (US$15,322) in 2008, ranked 2nd among 659 Chinese cities.

市情概况　苏州，中国城市，古称吴、吴都、吴中、东吴、吴门，现简称苏。苏州自有文字记载以来的历史已有4000多年， 公元前514年建城，是全国首批24个历史文化名城之一，全国重点风景旅游城市，也是4个全国重点环境保护城市之一。隋文帝开皇九年（公元589年）始定名为苏州，以城西­南的姑苏山得名，沿称至今。苏州是经国务院批准的较大的市，实际享受副省级城市待遇，是江苏省的经济、对外贸易、工商业和物流中心，也是重要的文化、艺术、教育和交通中心­。苏州位于，太湖之滨，长江南岸的入海口处，京沪铁路、京沪高铁（在建）和多条高速公路贯穿全境。苏州东邻上海，濒临东海；西抱太湖，背靠无锡，隔湖遥望常州；南临浙江，­与嘉兴接壤，所辖太湖水面紧邻湖州；北枕长江，东距上海市区80千米。是江苏省的东南门户，上海的咽喉，苏中和苏北通往浙江的必经之地。

苏州物华天宝，人杰地灵，因其从古至今繁荣发达、长盛不衰的文化和经济，被誉为人间天堂，素有丝绸之都（丝绸之府）、园林之城。苏州素来以山水秀丽、园林典雅而闻名天下，­今有回眸难忘锦绣园，浅笑又忆烟雨巷的名联传诵于世。又有江南园林甲天下，苏州园林甲江南的美称，又因其小桥流水人家的水乡古城特色，而有东方威尼斯、东方水都（东方水城­）之称。现今的苏州已经成为城中有园、园中有城，山、水、城、林、园、镇为一体，古典与现代完美结合、古韵今风、和谐发展的国际化大都市。2004年曾经成功举办世界遗产­大会。2006年举办了第三届全国体育大会。 2007举办了第16届金鸡百花电影节，并将金鸡奖初评永久评奖基地落户——苏州科技文化艺术中心。2007年12月22日，永久落户苏州太湖的全国首个旨在弘扬中华民族­优秀文化、促进东西方文化交流的全国性一级民间社团组织——太湖文化论坛，在北京宣布正式成立。太湖文化论坛的成立将为世界文明的对话以及区域文明的合作搭建一个永久性的­平台。太湖文化论坛永久坛址设在苏州太湖国家旅游度假区中信太湖城，太湖文化论坛常务理事会设在中国北京。
