Becker's arrangement of Xylophonia was originally done in 1973 and revised in 1991. It was written as a flashback to the beginning of the twentieth-century style of xylophone solos. The simple, yet intriguing melody is backed by a complicated accompaniment, courtesy of Bob Becker and his colleague William Cahn from their ensemble, Nexus. The classic stop-time chorus at the end of the trio is true to the style of the 1900s, where the ensemble plays short notes and the soloist plays over the top. The ending is a fast rendition of the trio, with the soloist playing the melody amongst a string of constant sixteenth-notes. With this molto vivo tempo, the piece ends with a rush to the finish.
