I am a teacher aide for children with varying disabilities, Autistic (Aspergers), and Downs Syndromes. These are my tips for teaching Autistic Children.

Short sharp instructions with demonstration teaching techniques seem to work much better than BLAH BLAH BLAH. Seem to work for me anyway. Some people may disagree with these tips, but I'm just trying to help.

Students usually take a liking to intimidating things like Dinosaurs, Sharks, Robots and Volcanoes. Use these topics to base your lessons. This makes the lessons more interesting for the student.

The robots at the end of this short video were drawn by my current male student Casey Rautu (aged 7 at the time) on an early version of Microsoft paint using limited tools and no undo function. Casey just fixed the problems in other ways. I used all the tips reverting to either when the situation required it (e.g. to refocus Casey). I just showed Casey how to draw shapes and lines, he did the rest without any help. I just cut them out for him.

Casey has been diagnosed as being in the higher end of the Autistic spectrum. Casey's progress at times is staggering and then sometimes, you just have to do the same task for 3 days in a row. That's life. Good patience lesson for the adults LOL.... Good Luck to ALL

  • Autism makes me think my legacy is dead. But I have recently found hope. You have been part of that hope!! Feel good today SIR!! For I Knight, and Anoint you!! I am now very proud, where once I was ashamed. You have taken the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference to me!!!!

  • This does work! Thankyou!!!!! My son is autistic... it broke my heart to learn this fact. I was in denial for some time. My son has a joy unparalelled by most, yet I was unhappy. With this simple technique I am able to get him to build blocks, and scribble onto pages of paper... a far leap from what he could do before. He is three now, I named him Zen Wolf Wolzen. Im am in your debt. I live in USA, and one might think help is everywhere, but not for the poor and young. THANKYOU From the bottom!!
