"Africa is a continent of mass transformation and hope as opposed to despair," argues Prendergast. The Darfur crisis can be resolved through what Prendergast calls "the 3 P's." Peacemaking: a comprehensive peace deal the addresses root causes of the conflict. Protection: the deployment of a hybrid UN/AU force. And punishment: accountability mechanisms that create a cost for perpetrators and give leverage to those seeking peace. If we make enough noise, insists Prendergast, the US will lead in implementing this agenda.

Author Bio: John Prendergast is Co-Chair of ENOUGH, a project to end genocide and crimes against humanity. Previously, Prendergast worked at the White House and State Department during the Clinton administration, where he was involved in a number of peace processes throughout Africa. Prendergast also has worked for members of Congress, the UN, human rights organizations, and think tanks. He has authored eight books on Africa, the latest of which he co-authored with actor/activist Don Cheadle, entitled Not on Our Watch. Prendergast travels regularly to Africa's war zones on fact-finding missions, peace-making initiatives, and awareness-raising trips involving network news programs, celebrities, and politicians.
