He had an addiction to cocaine in the late '70s to early '80s. It was his friend, John Belushi dying and the birth of his son that made him quit. I think that was a very smart thing to do. A good thing too. He didn't want to end up like John and he didn't want his son having a coke addicted father so he got help :)

@stalzz i had 17 yrs and went out the night of my sons funeral with only one thing on the TO DO list that night , but i dragged my grimey hung over(probably still would have blown above the limit) ass to the 10;30 am meeting ihad really been taaking my sobriety for granted probably was kinda cocky too. i owed it to the memory of my son to work a successful program one day at a time youre commet was dead on RELAPSE CAN HAPPEN IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE. but there are no accidently SLIPS
