Te Kohanga Reo Wainuiomata 1983

The first Te Kohanga Reo in New Zealand opened in Wainuiomata, Wellington in 1982. The following year in 1983, Princess Diane and Prince Charles visited Te Kohanga o Wainuiomata during their tour around Wellington. Thanks to Wakahuia for this recording.

My mother helped to set up this kohunga but sadly passed away before it opened. Thank you for uploading this. I was 5 when they came to Wainui, and I still remember meeting them.

Wainui is not a ghetto but a lovely place that still retains its community atmosphere, and still boasts the scenic wonders of nature that have been eroded from many towns and cities throughout the world.
