LONG LONG WAY
Well we've come a long long way,
Look at everything we know
We're getting smarter everyday,
Ah but where's it gonna go
For all the words that go by,
I've got a feeling inside
That after it's all said and done
Though we've come a long long way
This old world's not much better than it was
Oh it's just like the twenties, machine guns were plenty
Everyday you'd get shot up all the whisky'd get bought up
We'd be dancing the night through, just waiting until
The joke's on you, ah then what do you do
Model T's and Chevies just loaded with heavies
Shining faces like morning roses, aglow with their noses
Pressed on your window, just waiting to shine
Your concrete shoes, to the piano roll blues
We're flying space ships round the stars
Getting faster by the hour
Pretty soon we'll be on Mars
Build another Ivory tower
Thru all the praise that you borrow
There's still hunger and sorrow and after it's all said and done
Though we've come a long long way
This old world's not much better than it was
Oh it's just like the twenties, machine guns were plenty
Everyday you'd get shot up all the whisky'd get bought up
We'd be dancing the night through, just waiting until
The joke's on you, ah then what do you do
Oh Model T's and Chevies just loaded with heavies
Shining faces like morning roses, aglow with their noses
Pressed on your window, just waiting to shine
Your concrete shoes, to the piano roll blues

@accordionreid - and Jungle Jay Nelson, Bob McAdorey, Brian Skinner, Duff Roman, Bob Laine, Dave Johnson. Then it all changed so we switched to CHUM-FM with Pete Griffin, Geets Romo, John Donabie, etc. Good memories. :)

It was awesome being a teenager in the 70". These songs send shivers down my spine. These lyrics are amazingly prophetic in these time.

This was playing at a grocery store on Friday, in the midst of the stock market crashing I thought how ahead of the times this guy was. Proud to be Canadian!

"...Just waitin' to shine your concrete shoes."
Great lyrics and tempo change, very 'Ragtime'--reminds me of 'Boardwalk Empire,' or 'Miller's Crossing.'
Ian Thomas, like Art Bergmann, is one of Canada's finest and most overlooked singer-songwriters.

The CHUM AM station was the best with DJ's like Brent Slighthome. That is when personalities on radio were vital as they poured a lot into the music and Ian Thomas and Neil Young were pioneers not into fads in the listening audience. I am saying this being a former DJ in Canada. Now their music lives on while disco and glam rock have faded away into oblivion.
