Rappahannock County, a new music theater piece by acclaimed composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Mark Campbell commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War, will have its world premiere performance on April 12, 2011, the same day that Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in 1861. Under the musical direction of Rob Fisher with orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin and stage direction by Kevin Newbury, the premiere performances will be presented as part of the 2011 Virginia Arts Festival and will take place at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, Virginia from April 12-17, 2011. They will be followed by performances at the Modlin Center in Richmond, September 9-16, and at Texas Performing Arts at the University of Texas in Austin, September 18-25.
