The Finnish composer and pianist Selim Palmgren (1878-1951)studied with Liszt's pupil Conrad Ansorge and with Busoni. Although mainly based in Helsinki, he tought for a time at the Eastman School in New York. His piano music was quite popular in the first half of the 20th century, but, despite some recent CD releases of his piano concertos and solo works, he is now neglacted in the concert hall. I am not sure what the Finnish title of this work is (my edition only gives the title in Danish). This is the fifth and last piece in the set.

  • Benno Moiseiwitsch used to play this piece as an encore. Brief and unsophisticated though it may be, I find it quite charming; something about it always brings me back to the happy simplicity of childhood. Your playing is lovely, by the way!

  • @Bnjolly Thanks for your very kind comment. I only wish the sound quality on this video were better!

  • Very nice! I enjoy your playing of these beautiful songs. Do you do a video of opus 31 / no.3? I am trying to learn some of the songs and you play them so well. Thanks!

  • @supersass10 Thank you.I don't have the set of pieces you mention, alas. Incidentally, I am playing the full set of 'Finnish Rhythms' at a concert in two weeks time.
