"The Cloud" is really the internet which is often referred to as a 'cloud'. Cloud came about b/c it's often depicted/drawn as a 'cloud' in Visio/infrastructure environment schematics. I suppose it's a 'cloud' b/c information can go into and come out of the 'internet' by taking many different paths which is unknown at the time.
Cloud Computing is simply information & data sharing as well as applications and/or software as a service being served on the internet.
