Christine O'Donnell reporting for WAGT-TV.
Script:
Does your wallet feel strained every time you hit the pump? Get ready to feel that pinch even more. Some researchers at USC Aiken predict gas prices will reach $4.00 by the end of spring! The researchers say there are a variety of reasons for this predicted gas increase...but mainly they say this is a direct result from the oil spill that happened in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this year. Christine O'Donnell has the story.
$2.85, $2.87, $2.86...this is the current cost of gas per gallon in Aiken County. Some say it's already pretty steep.
Driver: "It's pretty high, but ya gotta get to work."
Driver: "I'm paying for this high gas."
That pricey gas is about to get even more expensive, according to geologist, and environmental science expert, Dr. Doug Wyatt.
Dr. Doug Wyatt, geologist and research professor, USC Aiken: "My gut feeling is that it'll go up to $4.00 before the end of this year."
Dr. Wyatt is a research professor at USC Aiken. He also works for the U.S. Department of Energy. He gives several reasons for his prediction:
-A world wide decrease in the production rate of oil to gas.
-The global supply of gas has been depleted.
-The competitive market between the U.S. and China is making the price go up.
- And, after the Gulf Oil crisis, there has been NO Off shore drilling.
Dr. Wyatt: "The amount of easily available oil is gone...and as long as there's a demand, the price will go up."
Tonya Mays says she doesn't know how people who make minimum wage are going to manage the increase.
Brian Kelley has to be on the road for his job. He jokes, saying he'll have to find different work.
Both Mays and Kelly say there has to be a better way to get people from A-B, without costing them so much.
Dr. Wyatt tells me the Department of Energy is looking for solutions...and that using natural gas in cars may be one of them. Another thing I wanted to point out is that people in Europe are already paying between $6 and $11 per gallon in gas.
Hehe, 2012 now! whatttttt!

The average gas price is 3.81 in taxachusetts right now if you pay with card, and 3.71 in cash. And that's just for regular, I want to complain, but after reading news from Europe, 8.64 in UK and 9.49 in Germany, 8.69 in France, that bloody expensive. God knows I will never pay that much with the current car I an driving right now. No wonder they drive diesel over there.

We in Australia have been suffering from ridiculously and unjustifiably high prices for Petrol for the past 10 years. We recently hit 170 cents for one litre of fuel. If Americans think they have it bad they need to go abroad, and for those that appear dumfounded as to why it is so expensive, the answer is simple. Don't intervene in the middle east. That is why they are so high.
