The Maned Wolf is a very unusual member of the dog family. Not a true wolf at all, it is the sole remaining remnant of the prehistoric carnivores from South American. Truly a unique and rare animal with a skunk like defense scent, a unique gate, and an amazing vocalization called a roar -bark. See more at EndangeredWolfCenter.org or on the Endangered Wolf Center Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Endangered-Wolf-Center/111698625553465

  • Why is it so rare that this is heard? Do they only do it under certain circumstances?

  • @TheNitroiMPACT They are endangered so even seeing one is rare....but beyond that they are very shy and fearful of humans so when they smell or hear you, they go hide. All wolves are afraid of humans and hide, but gray and red wolves howl for a variety of reasons. Maned wolves just don't vocalize as much as gray or red wolves. Add all of that togeother and that makes hearing this Maned wolf a rare treat.

  • do you know of any donation sites working to help save the maned wolf? i have heard a long roarbark myself in person and had the chance to appreciate the unique aroma lol i hope to work with them after college by far my favorite animal

  • @CursedK9 yes...the Endangered Wolf center is one of only a few breeding centers that is capable of rearing naturally born Maned wolves. Visit our Facebook page for more photos of the maned wolves that live there. If you are ever in St.Loius, I hope you will come and visit and see ours. We are a non-profit organization founded by marlin Merkins for the survival and recovery of canids.

  • Amazing Animal I hope I can figure out what that roar means someday..!

  • @ManedGenus22 In this particular case she was almost certainly saying something like 'You don't belong here so get lost'. This is clearly an alarm bark. She started doing it the minute she spotted me and quit doing it when I walked away. Amazing animal in deed!!

  • Geez. If I was in a tent and heard that, in the dark of night, I'd probably pee a little.

  • Oh, they're so amazing. I've fallen in love with them.

  • @dbuschhorn I agree, that's one terrifying roar-bark

    .

  • I went to Dubbo zooin Australia a few years ago and their 2 wolves did nothing but make this noise for the entire day. It's all you could hear

  • What's so awesome about that bark? Sounds just like some dogs. Lol. Pretty weird species tho - like a hyena/fox/wolf. Although they have adorable ears! :)

  • Its amazing. They have the anatomy, colouring and characteristice of hyenas, wolves and foxes combined. But they live in areas much like African Wild Dogs, and they have a roaring bark which is unlike anything I've ever heard! These are truly amazing animals indeed. <3 I'd love to see one for real one day x

  • I filmed a wild one less than 10 ft from me (check my video). No bad scent, no aggressiveness; he (or she) was only concerned with the food and probably of another guará (their name in Brazil).

I'm not sure but they left the list of endagered species going to near-threatened since their population has recovered substantially, at least in Brazil.

Farmers know now they're not a menace for the cattle and help a lot killing alien rodents.

  • what a beauty !

  • A very powerfull bark

  • It looks like a wolf/fox hybrid! :D I think I just found my new favorite animal.

  • Why was it barking??
