I was just reading the comments today and saw what you wrote. It is yes and no about Columbus. He landed somewhere in the Caribbean islands. The real oddity is that one part of North and South America, as named by Amerigo Vespucci, calls itself America. Villages have been discovered dating to circa 1000 AD built by Viking explorers who lived on the east coast of North America.
