Uploaded by request - footage of me playing through stage 3 (Red Riding Hood) of the Japan-only PS1 game "Kyuiin" on easy difficulty. This is right around the time where the game starts to get kind of challenging, so if you're looking to see what the game is like in action, this should give you a pretty good idea.

And yeah, I screwed up a lot at the beginning of this video, but I seemed to "get my groove" as I got farther into the stage. (:

Some more information on this game, for anyone who might be interested in playing it:

Kyuiin is basically a "cute-em-up" - a cutesy anime-inspired shoot-em-up - but unlike "Cotton" and other similar cute-em-ups, this one has virtually no static structures to weave around or anything - it's all open space with multi-layered background art, and the only obstacles impeding your progress are enemies and bullets. As such, I suppose you could call this a "bullet hell" or "danmaku" game, though it starts off so incredibly easy that it almost feels like "baby's first bullet hell shooter."

Controls are simple: X fires your weapon (hold for rapid-fire), square flicks the vacuum's plug behind you (does a LOT more damage than your standard weapon, but has an extremely short range), and O uses a special move, which turns you temporarily invincible and shoots a giant expanding beam in front of you (though its range and duration are based on how many enemies you've sucked up with the vacuum, and indicated by the level 0-3 listed on the lower-left part of the screen - and each time you use this move, your weapon level decreases by 1, which also makes your weapon a little weaker!).

Unlike a lot of bullet hell shooters, the majority of projectiles enemies throw at you (as well as smaller enemies themselves!) are automatically sucked up by your vacuum as long as you're at full health, meaning any bullets that approach the front side of your character can generally be ignored - it's really just the top, bottom, and back of your character you need to worry about. Some projectiles can also be destroyed by your own shots or special beam weapon, which is also really helpful. And it takes two hits to kill you (on easy mode, anyway), with a health pack spawning within seconds of you getting hit the first time (though you're pretty helpless until you pick it up, since you can no longer suck up bullets or small enemies, and your weapon is severely downgraded).

The downside to the game being as forgiving and helpful as it is, though, is that the first two stages are REALLY, REALLY EASY, to the point of being almost insulting. If you get the homing weapon power-up, you can literally coast through the entire first stage by parking yourself on the left side of the screen, and holding the X button. It's pretty boring, and the cutesy visuals and weird enemies can only entertain you so much before you start to get a little tired of them!

Fortunately, the game's difficulty steadily increases with each stage, to the point that stages 3-5 are really fun challenges, and stages 6 and 7 are REALLY hard, forcing you to rely on quick reflexes to dodge an insane number of indestructible projectiles, like in a REAL danmaku game - and even the quick-spawning health packs don't help make this any easier! Unlimited continues and a plentiful number of checkpoints ease the game's frustration a bit, though, and you really could think of this kind of like a "bullet hell trainer."

It's a pretty decent little game, and for only 600 yen on Japanese PSN, it's well worth picking up, if you get a chance. No Japanese language ability required - just shoot to kill, and enjoy the quirky visuals and music!

I've also previously uploaded the game's anime prologue and intro to YouTube, if you're interested in getting a feel for the basic storyline:
