my 24-105 just did the exact same thing! It end up costing me around $400 to get it fixed! That's about half of what the lens is worth! I never dropped it or did anything, seems to me Canon should see this is an internal failure and not charge that much!

I had the same problem, the technician made a diagnostic without looking at the lens. Took me a couple of months to fix it, about $100 for the replacement part direct from canon parts in the US (YG2-2200-010) and about $70 for the work, here in Guatemala.
