The influential host of BBC Radio 1's Experimental Show makes a whirlwind pilgrimage to check out the LA and San Francisco music scenes.

Music obsessive Mary Anne Hobbs has the power to make and break emerging artists on her influential BBC Radio 1 show. So when she takes a profound interest in a new music scene, you know it's something special. Lately, she's been so tapped into the what she calls West Coast Rocks - LA and San Francisco bass-heavy producers such as Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Lazer Sword, Ghosts on Tape, Samiyam and Gaslamp Killer (just to name a few) - that she made a special pilgrimage to see it with her own eyes. Here, she discusses the impact this scene has had not only on her, but on music globally.

  • I think I've never heard anyone who is hyping things up as much as Miss Hobbs. Whatever she is talking about sounds like she's having an orgasm about it. Probably the reason so many people listen to her show, lol.

  • she's realy realy on flying lotus's nuts

  • @xlr8r7 yeah no shit, I can hear the slurping from here.

  • kinda sad that she doesnt mention Nosaj Thing..

  • Lotus the godfather? What about groups like Boards of Canada who have been at it since the early 90's? I mean Lotus is bomb but reall MAH? I think she just wants his cock.

  • She sure likes to use her hands while talking.

  • WTF IS SHE TALKING ABOUT EVERYTHING STARTS WITH JDILLA PERIOD

  • UM...I've just seen my name appear below making some comments back in December. Basically, my account has been hacked, but by someone who clearly has a problem with MAH. Its kinda messed up, and i don't like my name being attached to things i don't think and actually wouldn't say.

Whoever you are, post under your own name!!

  • All i can say is. . . laugh out loud. She is the face of dubstep, she championed it for years, fuck through her show 6 years ago i found a new love, so she goes to the States and talks shit, how is that repping the UK? I'm sure that if the first dubstep djs/producers in the States got together they could do a way better breakdown of how the scene progressed over there, they would at least know what they were talking about
