What is http compared to https?
http is part of the url. the letters stand for hyper text transfer protocol. There has to be some rules when transferring data from the web to your computer and vice versa. https is hyper text transfer protocol secure. The s stands for secure. You are probably wondering how it is secure.

With regular http, people on the same network as you can get access to your online accounts. It is called session jacking and it is very easy to do. Any amateur can get a hold of your email account for example. They can only do this if they are on the same network as you.

Since a lot of coffee shops, hotels, and libraries, have wireless networks for the public, the need for security is very important. So some websites offer a https url. The difference is that with the http information is transferred without encryption and therefore any can access it. Whereas an https sends data using encryption.

Other people can still get the signal but since it is encrypted the person will not be able to decode the message.
