Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30
1. Allegro ma non tanto (excerpt)
Philadelphia Orchestra
Conducted by Eugene Ormandy
Sergei Rachmaninov, piano
Note: Rachmaninoff made two rather brief cuts of 4 and 2 bars in the first movement, 13 bars of the Intermezzo and made two large cuts, 23 and 13 bars, in the Finale.
@jonnyslowjo actually rachmaninoff said that the first time he "heard" this piece was when he heard Vladimir Horowitz play the piece. He could never really play it the way he wanted it to be played but when he heard Horowitz play it, that's the way he wanted it to be played. He played it with Horowitz in the steinway hall basement with Horowitz playing the primo part and him playing the secondo part, so I think Horowitz does the best performance of this because the composer of the piece said so.

early classical composers didn't rely on notation software but they can write beautiful music with only pen and papers

Despite the fact that he wrote this concerto, ironically his performance is flat and utterly uninspiring. I think David Helfgott did a better job of performing this concerto than this stilted and robotic performance.

@samlab0920 To correct myself: After some curious research, I have learned that Rachmaninoff had been quoted to say “This is the way I always dreamed my concerto should be played, but I never expected to hear it that way on Earth.” when speaking of Horowitz's interpretation of Rach's third piano concerto.

@samlab0920 To be fair, I have heard that for Rach's Prelude in C# minor, commonly known as The Bells of Moscow, Rachmaninoff himself was of the opinion that his student's interpretation of the piece was more accurate than his own. Though don't quote me on this, as I could very well be mistaken.
