"O Tannenbaum" is a song of German origin although no one really knows who wrote the melody. The first recording of lyrics to the tune reach back to 1550 although the best known version of the song is credited to Leipzig composer Ernst Anschutz in 1824. A "tannenbaum" is a fir tree (German: die tanne), and, of course, the song has been translated into English with the title "O Christmas Tree". It has been said the song was brought to England during the Victorian period by Prince Albert. Nat sings it here in German.

  • I like this song. My english is not better than his english. And I think it

wasn't easy for him to sing this song in german.

  • @derAndy19851 When Nat married Maria Ellington in the late 1940's she encouraged him to concentrate on his diction so that he might not only speak English with more authority but also enable him to sing in other languages more easily. Nat recorded not only in German, but in French, Italian, and many songs in Spanish.

I don't think he really understood or spoke fluently in any language other than English. It was to his credit that he worked hard to sing in other languages.

  • his Deutsch pronunciation is Furchtbar!!! absolutely laughable. they should have corrected him before they recorded this for all time. what a beautiful voice he had though

  • Nat's German pronunciation was probably about as good as Marlene Dietrich's English however.

  • What a beautiful song!

  • Nat's rendering of this Christmastide ode is the best, truest, manly lovely, most melodic and purely heartfelt and reverential. Annually through the Epiphany and beyond I play it over and over intermittently as a celestial anthem, heaven sent and perfect. (And love the clarion flourishes. And I studierte Deutsch.) Frohliches Neues Jahr!

  • This makes me think of my father. He always sang to all of us in German at christmas.

  • @Pisces31660 its the message in the song du blode koo, he sung it from his heart.

  • You got to ammit he gave it a try.....

  • Who cares if his German pronunciation isn't perfect? At least he tried and showed respect to all Germans by singing this in German instead of English. :)
