A disturbed Brooklyn man who police say stabbed his mother to death and brutally wounded his father Monday morning, is listed in critical condition after attempting to commit suicide by jumping in front of an oncoming train following the attacks.

According to police, 31-year-old Ryan Devaney attacked his parents, Margaret and Raymond Devaney, some time before 8 a.m. inside their Howard Place home in the Windsor Terrace section of Brooklyn.

The deranged man stabbed his mother in the eye and abdomen and then turned the knife on his father, repeatedly stabbing him in the throat before fleeing the scene.

"They were nice people, very nice people. Moved in a few years ago," said neighbor Christof Bohtif, adding, "Not the son -- the son was a problem."

Neighbors called 911 after spotting the injured couple staggering outside their home looking for help.

The victims were transported to New York Methodist Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead and the man was listed in critical condition.

After the brutal stabbings, police say Ryan Devaney fled to the nearby 15th Street-Prospect Park subway station, where he jumped in front of an oncoming G train at about 8:20 a.m.

Devaney, who miraculously survived the attempted suicide, was transported to Lutheran Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

"I'm not surprised because this is New York and anything can happen, so I'm not gonna say I'm so shocked. It could happen anywhere," said neighbor Cliff Batella.

Investigators are still trying to piece together the gruesome attack that left one dead and two critically injured.

Neighbors admit they long suspected the son struggled with mental illness, and they claim he may have had issues with drugs. (12.13.10)
