if you're wondering what she put onto the fruit with her brush, it was probably just sieved apricot jam mixed with a little bit of water. this is to make the fruit nice and shiny, so they look more beautiful. it's a very easy trick, but so worth the work.
next time you make a fruit cake, don't forget to coat it with this, it will make it look so much better, believe me :)
