Engineers in Utah think a voyage to Mars isn't beyond reach, with the help of a brand new rocket. On Monday, ATK Space Systems and NASA unveiled the rocket.

seriously, the problem with long space flight and fire based propulsion is you run out, now build a base on the moon(or even floating in space, with a Railgun type launcher bed, and you could fire a ship to mars, using no fuel, then have it carry enough payload to return as well, most space flights suffer the problem of having to be designed to land inside an atmosphere, which makes them not ideal for space flight, a true space engine would be not good for atmo flight!

Ion and plasma ronkets are only good in space. Their impulsion is way too low to overcome Earth's Gravity.

@marmaladekamikaze Anything is better than chemical rockets..rather use ion drives... or things like VASIMR.

I rather have NASA on the ground, developing new technology that'll be worth while when it does come into fruition(and trust me, something will) than fly a thousand times a year using the same old technology..without any innovations being made.

This engine uses Este's letter "Y" at your local hobby store. Solid rocket fuel is the most dumb-ed down type of fuel. Even know computers and software have advanced. Actual rocket hardware has gone backwards since the 60's.
