Tampa fire crews were at the Museum of Science and Industry Friday night to be honored guests at a reception for a 9-11 exhibition created by students and faculty at Fivay High School in Pasco County.
The social studies department at Fivay was looking for a project to commemorate the upcoming ten year anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Centers. They decided to allow students to research the events of 9-11 and recreate their lessons in artwork on fire hydrants. Several local businesses provided materials and support to the projects. Students came to school over the winter holidays to work on their projects.
The exhibit is titled Three Hours, Two Towers, and A Lifetime To Remember. Combined the students created about a dozen pieces of art that expressed what lessons they learned from their 9-11 studies and more importantly how it made them feel. The students decorated the hydrants with images of the heroes of 9-11 and pays tribute to the firefighters and police officers who protect our communities today. They tell a moving story and each hydrant artwork is a part of the overall story that runs through the exhibit.
The Fivay High School exhibit will be on display at MOSI in Tampa a short while longer. The exhibit is scheduled to be a premiere display at the opening of the 9-11 Memorial Museum at ground zero in New York City scheduled to open sometime in 2012.
