This painting is truly amazing. If I have a picture 4x6 and I want to blow it up to 18 by 24 EXACTLY like the photo then exact detail is what I want. Hemanzoon should breath himself and let that hot air out of his head.

@hermanzoon Photographs are taken of something "real" aka "lifelike". Everything in our world has so many intricate details and colors (impossible to see individually because they blend together) that can only be captured accurately by a camera, not by an Artist. Artists paint what THEY feel should be seen, not what might REALLY be there. No 2 people see alike, so try to paint something "real" & you'll only get something similar. Paint what YOU see & you have originality.

it looks great! and only your third oil painting!
Don't listen to some people who criticize perfection. Every one has their own style of painting. And not only Sargent's can make a painting breathe!

sawes, you inspired me to try glazing on this next painting i'm doing, adjusting the face of a women that doesn't look like her picture. after I get her face just right, then I'll glaze her face and whole body. But I guess once i start glazing, it'll be a while before it's completed. But it'll be worth it. How long do you wait between layers? I need to learn more about that technique....
too much like a photograph. Not very painterly.... even by the standard of an early Rembrandt or Rubens. There is more life in any work by Sargent.

This was my third oil painting, actualy I am not a painter
Thanks to compare my work with Rembrandt or Rubens's early work, I know it is a long way of practice and expiriance to reach Sargents or maybe Bouguereau quality work

I wasn't actually comparing it to Rembrandt or Rubens, except to imply that people mistakingly equate "detail" (such as seen here) with "real" and "lifelike", when there really isn't connection at all. Detail does not a great painting make. There is "detail" in early Rembrant, but his technical ability surpassed mere copying of "detail". Bouguereau was still painterly and Sargent even more so. The work must breathe.

"The work must breathe." I am agree, but a lot of experience and work will be necesary to reach that level, and I dont have such experience and years of work
