Yes, all of those things have an environmental impact but so do the vehicles that do the mining of the raw bauxite, and the ships that take the bauxite from Australia to Norway to get smelted would require maintainance. It's a massive globalised process. Manufacturing something out of raw material tends to take much more energy and resources than recycling. Mind you, the best thing in terms of energy conversation would be not buying & drinking the cans in the first place.

How about the machine's manufacture including the processing of raw materials to make the components. Additionally, the transportation/ installation of the machine that would have to include the continued servicing and emptying of it. The van that the engineer drives would also contribute to carbon emmissions, replacement of tyres, parts for the van........

Yes - the machine runs on electricity but the whole process of collecting and recycling cans uses less energy than mining virgin bauxite, transporting it across the world, smelting it into aluminium and shaping new cans which are used all to briefly to carry a drink then end up occupying our limited landfill space.

Let's also not forget that the machine runs on electric, the consumpsion of which, probably contributes more to global warmin' than if you just chucked the can away. Still, a token effort. Wow, that backin' music track sounds like it woz dun by sum really talentid musicians! Wonder who they are 'n how many No: 1 hits they've had? >:o)

The local Councils ought to watch this: they send out loads of printed matter in the form of advice on how they spend our Council Tax and then charge people to take it away in the rubbish. They should include how much it costs to do this in the same litrature. Ironic!

Yes, it is a bit ironic, although it's one small piece of paper for the whole batch of cans/bottles...rather than each individual can. Also - some of the recycling machines give out cash instead. I suppose some of the supermarkets want to ensure that the refunded money is spent in their shop.

I find it ironic that machine at the end has to spit a little paper reciept (that will probably end getting thrown out) with every can it takes in.
