polished stone axe (adze) -
is it really possible to make a sharp cutting edge ???
what is the secret ?

Polishing time : 5 hours ;
Hafting Time : 2 hours ;
Cutting fresh wood : 20 mn

This stone axe would be efficient at cracking skulls or digging soft soil ...

Not the best tool for wood cutting (except for rotten wood or maybe charred wood) !!

Excellent tool for the prehistoric farmer who wants to dig into soft soil (clearly better tool than the digging stick).

materials :
- axe head : super hard smooth stone from Crovani Bay, Corsica
- pecking and grinding : sand stone, quartzite, sand, siliceous stone
- hafting : wild cherry tree wood and cotton string

- wood cutting tested on fresh wood (chestnut tree) and rotten wood [success :-) ]
- vegetables : Alexanders, which seeds I sown last march

  • To je velmi krásná ukázka. Oceňuji velkou práci.

  • @MILOSLAVJMP

    thanks ;

    after that, I tried sharpening the edge with water (and sand), following Musteriano's advice : grinding is quicker and it's easier to get a sharper edge [video : "stone adze - sharper"].

  • very nice, but I would take the top piece of wood off, so I could tie it firmer.

  • @wanderinggibbon

    yes, the hafting was a bit strange;

    for now, what bothers me more is the lack of cutting power : I need to apply a better grinding method

  • Pretty amazing work on that hardstone, well done!

  • @touchnova ; @mooseyou2

    thanks !

    next step : better grinding following musteriano's advice (add water)

  • just another day in minecraft....

  • The method with the leaf is ingenious!

  • @freejutube Yes, that was a lot of work, for a not very sharp tool; enough for digging, but not for cutting. If I think of anything, I'll let you know.

  • a lot of work but

    cool adze
