1976 Ted Smith Aerostar 601P converted to a Superstar 700. i had my father video me taking off in our Aerostar and i didnt realize how beautiful the engines sounded on takeoff until i watched the video. the Superstar 700 takeoff is 42" of manifold pressure, and 2500 rpm on the props. Turn your speakers up and Enjoy

  • I've always liked these plane and thought about buying one before I bought a Duke. The aerostar would have won out because of fuel usage and cruise speed if it wasn't for the awkward boarding, or at least for me, just wish they could have added another entrance for the passengers. Still a great plane and if the bank account would allow it I would love to have one right between my 195 and duke. Enjoyed the video.

  • @PrivatePilot1999

Thanks for the comment...yeah when we were in the market we were actually looking at the Duke as well.....

The boarding of the Aerostar was another one of Ted Smith's designs that make you go Hmmmmm...His reasoning for the entrance was the Pilot was the last one in and the first one out..this would almost for sure in a perfect world keep anyone from ever walking into the prop of a running engine...we loved the airplane and hope to have another someday...Jb

  • Is it just me or does there appear to be smoke coming from the port engine?

  • yeah, that's one of the reasons i wanted to have the video taken. someone had mentioned that they saw it and we wanted to see if we could also. some small adjustments took care of it.

  • Always a beautiful sight and sound. Great job!

  • Thanks for viewing! Glad you enjoyed it...

  • @Jasonwbtx When I looked at the aerostar the one I flew wasn't a superstar700, still really liked it though. Did the aerostar set a few speed records at one time? Just curious, whats the cruise speed of the superstar700? I'd like to buy one but if fuel prices insurance and everything else keeps going up I might sell one of the planes I have now just to be able to afford to keep the other. It would be a hard chioce but I would probably have to keep my Cesna 195, just can't replace it.

  • Love the Aerostar, great plane! Was not aware that they can trail smoke like a B-52, lol...

  • Damn! that was a short take off!

  • Looks to be a Super II, like the one I currently fly. Not many of them around...

Kudos to your dad for getting this great video. I'll have to find a volunteer to try something similar with our machine.

Problem is that I never get to have fun with it. Always point A to Point B on company business. I guess I'll just have to take it out for a "maintenance" flight at a place with a good camera position.
