Another explanation:

Dakshina means south, but also buddhi.

In this Shiva is the inner buddhi of man.

Buddhi is the light (awaking)of understanding.

Wise man sit aroung Dakshinamurthy. They are scholars. But the highest knowledge (para-vidya) is beyond words, beyond scriptures. That is why His teachings are silent.

The banyantree is all knowledge with all it branches. Already known by the wise. They are searching for enlightment by buddhi = dakshina.

Can someone please explain to me verse 5?

It says: "...their comprehension is worse than that of women, children, blind, and the dull."

Is this verse referring to women as less intelligent than most men?

rkrc, I also pondered over this while making video. One thing for sure that women are NOT considered less inteligent. I think it talks about specific type of women who are engaged in worldly pleasures and have no interest in spirituality.

It could be the wrong translation. Certain words or phrases from sanskrit cannot be translated to english to reveal correct meaning.

Mere theoretical knowledge of advaita does not qualify an arrogant advaitic pandit to be a Sage. Such a pandit is in practice very much a dualist or dvatist in daily life because of his/her ego very much alive. Only a Sage who has destroyed or erased his/her ego and lives in the egoless state of advaita is a true advaitist. Such Sages are very few indeed. That is only possible by the compassionate Grace of Swami Dakshinamurty. Otherwise it is impossible. Mere knowledge of advaita is useless.

@prajna8 You are right, but knowledge leads to consciousness and this ever concciousness leads to ego-elimination and further to non-dualism.one way to see that spiritual evolution starts with surrender of self to receive Grace, and through ever-conciousness that the Atman is residing within the Para-atman that the difference disappears and merges into One.But Grace is the pre-reqisite for this evolution.

@rkrc .... it means .....an illusion of maya.... if you want to understand "yourself", you should look at everyone or everything as "atman" not a subject or object. otherwise you will be trapped in unreality like .... this is a woman, that is a chair., those are trees or it is a house... or i am a rich or poor... at the end you will lost your real self. i think if you read a autobiography of shri Raman Maharshi, you may be get good understanding and idea about this....
