THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (1939)

The trials and tribulations of being a queen are the subject of this week's "Tired Old Queen at the Movies."
Bette Davis and Errol Flynn star in THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX directed by Michael Curtiz. Towards the end of her reign and well into her sixties, England's greatest monarch, Elizabeth R, finds herself drawn to Lord Essex, a handsome young knight in her court, with a proud nature and political aspirations of his own. He woos and wins her, but is his love based on true affection or a desire for power and the need to over throw her and take her thrown?
Bette didn't want Flynn for the role and fought him throughout the production. For his part, Flynn turns in a charming and deft performance as Essex, underplaying to his flamboyant co-star and the results are electric. Bette was in her late twenties when she attempted to play Elizabeth, and reticent about taking on the role. She commented on this to veteran actor Charles Laughton, who'd won an Oscar playing Henry the Eighth. Laughton's advice stayed with Davis for a lifetime. "My Dear, never stop daring to hang yourself."
